If you are using social media to get as many followers as you can, just to say that you have them, this post is not for you.

If you want people to follow your business and refer their friends, family and neighbors you’ll have to offer them something else than a popularity contest.

When a business writes “follow us please on Twitter” and then proceeds to talk about kittens, I will not spend my time and energy going online, logging in, finding the business and clicking follow.

Instead use social media as a marketing tool to engage your audience.

No one will give you their business because you say “please.” They want to know the value of your service and then they will pay accordingly, or in this case, follow your social media.

So change “follow us on Twitter, please” to “receive daily local discounts when you follow us on Twitter,” or “find out how to win $100 by joining Twitter,” or “discover the secret health problem with your laundry and much more by following us on Twitter.”

Give them value, be helpful, address their needs, give them something that they can share and your social media is no longer a popularity contest, but a marketing tool with hundreds of new followers.
